Sea Gardening in September
Join us for a very special autumn forage where we will show you some of the tastiest seaweeds on the Waterford Coast. Learn how to use seaweed in your everyday cooking, medicinal uses, how to dry & store it and how to make a seaweed bath.
Seaweed has been part of Waterford's food heritage for generations - snacking on dilisk, sleabhcan in springtime and carrageen drying on rooftops in summer. And it was used as a fertiliser on potato crops all along the coast. We are delighted to bring this knowledge to you as part of the Harvest Festival 2016 .
Afterwards, we will retreat to the welcoming Mother McHugh's Pub in Fenor where you can taste a range of seaweed breads, canapes, savoury and sweet dishes, including some recipes from The Sea Garden.
There will be plenty of time to share stories of seaweed, food and foraging!
Sea Gardening is how we descrobe our approach to foraging - cutting a small amount from the plant, leaving it to re-grow and re-generate, just like cutting herbs or flowers in the garden. It's sustainable and takes account of all the other creatures on the rocky shore that depend on seaweed for survival.
Wear a few layers of warm comfortable clothing. Footwear needs to be waterproof ; wellingtons, old runners or golf shoes, crocs, neoprene footies are all suitable. Bring a small ziplock bag & scissors if you'd like to take home some sea vegetables.

Meeting Point: Carpark in Fenor Village, opposite church. Fenor is 6 km west of Tramore on the Coast Road.
